What differentiates Fortinet Fortigate NGFW from other similar products?

I used the Fortigate device effectively in the company I worked in the online retail sector. It worked very stable in terms of performance, especially during campaign periods under very serious traffic. For example, when I saw 2 million instant concurrent sessions at Fortigate, which is the gateway of all environments, while there were nearly 250 concurrent users on the site, the device's CPU was 27% and memory was 29%.

What differentiates Fortinet Fortigate NGFW from other similar products?

‎The most significant technical differentiator is Fortinet’s use of purpose-built Security Processing Units. While competitors primarily rely on general-purpose CPUs or off-the-shelf FPGAs, FortiGate uses custom ASICs. This allows us to perform heavy tasks like inspection and IPS with significantly less latency and higher throughput than software-defined architectures.

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

‎My favorite technical win is that FortiGate performs hardware-accelerated decryption. I can inspect encrypted traffic for hidden malware in real-time, which is a task that often brings CPU-based competitors to a halt. I value that SD-WAN is not a separate license. This allows me to manage branch connectivity, application steering, and perimeter security through a single policy set. It reduces my management tax and simplifies the branch office stack.

What do you dislike most about this product?

‎I have experienced stable releases that introduced unexpected bugs in the GUI or caused HA clusters to desync.

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

Understanding the underlying logic of how FortiOS handles Policy Routing versus Static Routing will save you dozens of hours in troubleshooting.
