What differentiates Microsoft SQL Server from other similar products?

The thing that differentiates Microsoft SQL Server from other similar products is that it has a deep integration with Micorosoft ecosystem so a good product if you are already using the Microsoft ecosystem . It even has feature which bundles multiples services inside one platform like RDBMS , ETL , SSRS or even OLAP and data mining . The security model is also quite strong . It has a Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) so , we can say that it is truly enterprise grade security . There's also a hybrid cloud advantage as it smoothly integrates with Microsoft Azure SQL database .

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

My favourite aspect of the product is that it is sort of all in one integrated platform . Unlike other competitors in market like MySQL or PostgreSQL it brings everything together in a single platform . Whether it be data storage for which there is a database engine , data integration in the form of ETL tools , even has built-in reporting services , in terms of analytics it supports OLAP and data mining . Overall this product saves time in setup and maintenance , reduces time fragmentatiom to a good extent , ensures smooth compatibility between different components and thus quite ideal for enterprise environments .

What do you dislike most about this product?

What , I dislike the most about this product is that it starts feeling limited when handling very complex queries compared to some other databases in market . In terms of large high traffic apps scaling it horizontally can be quite tricky without extra setup . The configurations which are there as default option aren't always optimized , so performance tuning can take some time and serious efforts. It is not a beginner friendly product . Error messages are quite noisy at times which makes it hard to debug them . It lacks some out of the box advanced features which others like Postgres offer.

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

Start with the basics first, mainly focus on understanding simple queries, tables, and relationships before jumping into advanced features . Use proper indexing early, mainly because it makes a huge difference in performance as your data starts growing . Learn normalization but don’t overdo it, mainly try to keep a balance so your database stays efficient without making queries too complicated Turn on strict mode, mainly to catch incorrect or bad data early instead of dealing with issues later . Plan for scaling from the beginning, mainly even if your project is small now, think about how it will handle more users and data in the future .

Pros

  • Helps Innovate
  • Continually Improving Product
  • Reliable
  • Performance Enhancing
